Gynecologic cancer brachytherapy

Denver Radiation Oncology at Swedish experts are experienced in providing high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy as a highly effective treatment for gynecologic cancers. HDR brachytherapy is an advanced radiation treatment method that allows for personalized, targeted, precise delivery of radiation.

Our team works collaboratively with experts from related disciplines to ensure the highest quality brachytherapy treatments. First, our team coordinates with a large, multidisciplinary team on cancer cases to make recommendations about including appropriate radiation therapies. Then, these care plans are put into place with a care team that often includes:

  • Radiation oncologist
  • Gynecologic oncologist
  • Radiation physicist
  • Dosimetrist
  • Radiologist
  • Specialized nurses

How it works

The brachytherapy procedure begins in the clinic or operating room where the radiation oncologist places a specialized applicator against or inside the target area. The patient is then moved to the radiation suite where the team uses imaging to create an up-to-the-minute, customized care plan. The plan is then completed by placing radiation through the applicator and directly against (intracavity) or into (interstitial) the tumor. This allows a high dose of radiation to be delivered directly to the malignancy. The applicator is then removed, and the patient carries no radiation from the procedure room. Completed as an outpatient procedure, patients are back to normal activity upon discharge with minimal side effects.

Benefits of brachytherapy

Patients find success with brachytherapy treatment for gynecologic cancers as it is:

  • Personalized to their specific anatomy, tumor location (up-to-the-minute) and health needs
  • Targeted, allowing for the highest doses of radiation to help eradicate the cancer
  • Precise, minimizing damage to healthy areas of the body, and leaving minimal side effects
