Specialized programs

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which abnormal brain activity triggers recurring seizures. In addition to seizures, patients with epilepsy often experience muscle spasms, loss of consciousness, irregular behavior and varying emotions.

Our program provides a comprehensive epilepsy treatment program for adults. We recognize that everyone has a different experience with epilepsy. We approach each patient’s case with a personalized plan that often combines medication and lifestyle adjustments. For patients with refractory seizures, we evaluate for advanced treatment options such as epilepsy surgery.

Our neurological diagnostic exams

Determining the root cause of a patient’s symptoms is vital in an effective treatment plan. We employ a wide range of advanced exams to determine an accurate diagnosis.

Electrodiagnostic Testing (EMG and Nerve Conduction Studies)

Our providers use EMG to help identify conditions in the spinal nerve roots, peripheral nerves, and muscles. During this exam, electrodes applied to the patient record electrical activity in the muscles and nerve cells that control them. This information helps providers to determine the health of these muscles and nerve cells. These studies help identify nerve and muscle disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and peripheral neuropathy.

Our neurological treatments

Our team is dedicated to providing the very best neurological treatment options for our patients. We use many different types of modalities in our care plans, including surgical and non-surgical options. A few of our treatments include:

Botulinum toxin therapy can be used to treat patients with conditions such as cervical dystonia, blepharospasm (spasms of the eyelids) and spasticity. For this treatment, a provider injects a neurotoxin protein to a targeted area to block the nerve signals that are causing muscle spasms.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS)

This minimally invasive surgical procedure is used to treat patients with debilitating neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's and essential tremor. During the procedure, a small device is implanted in the brain and in the chest. This device functions as a “brain pacemaker,” sending electrical signals to regulate symptoms of conditions.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS)

This minimally invasive procedure is an effective treatment for epilepsy and seizure disorders. A small device is implanted that stimulates the vagus nerve with electrical impulses. These signals help regulate the symptoms of epilepsy and seizures.
